BANGALORE: Rioters better watch out. The state police striking force will soon go hi-tech — complete body protective gear will make personnel more agile. It allows for a 'hands-free' approach to policing mobs. The cane or fibre shield that was cumbersome to carry can be done away with, and vital parts of the anatomy like the chest and stomach too will be well guarded.
Over two days in April, police force took a beating in the violence that broke out during thespian Rajkumar's funeral in the city. One policeman was beaten to death and over 200 personnel were hospitalised. Most sustained head injuries and fractures and several hundred other policemen suffered minor injuries. The riot gear currently being used comprises a helmet, bulky padded vest, anklets, heavy fibre shield and lathi.
The total gear weighs nearly 3.5 kg. The Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) is procuring new riot gear being used by many police units across the world. KSRP ADGP A R Infant said the new gear is ideal for three main vulnerable areas — head, torso and groin. "Being able to use both hands and with lighter gear will make the personnel more agile. Carrying shields all the time, specially during riots, is often cumbersome. The new equipment provides complete body protection," Infant said.
This new gear that costs around Rs 8,000 per unit comprises protective pads for the shoulder, chest, groin, knees, shin bone, ankle and feet... ... Made of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) foam and plastic plates lined with cloth that absorbs sweat, the entire gear weighs 2 kg. "The protective gear we use is heavy and it's difficult to run. We can protect our groin only with the shield and our legs are constantly exposed. Lighter and more effective protection gear is welcome," a personnel of the KSRP 9th Battalion said. Riaz Shakib of Mind Masters, who conducted a workshop on stress management for KSRP personnel said the reserve police are more fit compared to the civil police as they do not spend much time in polluted environments.
